Upcoming events

Join the Audubon Society of Portland and Adventures Without Limits at Base Camp Brewing Company to enjoy happy-hour specials on locally brewed beer and food (from 4:30 to 6 p.m.) and to hear special guest speakers.

Enjoy uplifting tales from the trail from female long distance solo trekker Mary Moynihan ( http://marriedtothetrail.com ), as she talks of conquering the triple crown of hiking and other adventures.  We also very excited to have Audubon's Wildlife Care Center Operations Manger Lacy Campbell on hand to speak as well.

Both nonprofits are part of the 2014  Willamette Week Give!Guide , a year-end fundraiser. The holiday happy hour takes place on one of the Give!Guide's Big Give days – everyone who makes a Give!Guide donation that day will be entered to win a case of Rogue Distilled Spirits – so we're providing additional incentives to attendees who donate to the Give!Guide that afternoon.

Come join us this winter and learn the basics of snowshoeing, and/or continue working on this winter skill.  We spend the day on Mt. Hood's snow-covered trail, surrounded by a winter wonderland of snow-covered pines and majestic scenery.  This is a beginners' level snowshoe trip and is 2-3 miles in length, depending on the participants' ability level.  Bring a lunch and we provide a hot drink.

If you have driven over Mt Hood, you have probably gone right by Trillium Lake Snow Park and not even noticed it.  This trip starts off on tree lined snowy pathways, meandering its way through the woods under the towering mass of Mt Hood.  As the trail makes its way out to the lake, you are welcomed to views of Trillium Lake enveloped in a scene of winter with the slopes of Mt Hood looming in the background.  This is one of the truly classic scenes of Mt. Hood, used in countless postcards and calendars.

Join us for an overnight winter trip to the wild Oregon Coast, and stay in comfortable yurts at night.  Hike to the end of Cape Lookout to catch a glimpse of some migrating gray whales and watch the winter storms out at sea.  Cape Lookout is considered to be the premier whale-watching site on the Oregon coast, “and with more than two hundred gray whales now summering off Oregon,” the chances of sighting one heading north or south at various times are pretty good.  The best times to catch the migration are in mid-March, during the northward migration, and December through early January, when migrants are headed to south Baja for the winter.

Cape Lookout was formed in the distant geologic past of the Miocene Epoch.  It is constructed of hardened basalt formed from molten lava from under the earth’s crust during volcanic activity.  The northern face possesses many coves and is lower in elevation than the southern side which has nearly straight basaltic southern cliffs.  These cliffs have resisted the attack of wind and sea for over 20 million years.

The Bennett Pass Snow Park is a great way to see the snow covered landscape of Mt Hood.  We will start our trip on the south side of the mountain and hike away from its rising peak with many photo opportunities along the way.  We will travel about 1 mile from along a ridgeline with views down into the drainage of the East Fork of the Hood River, where it starts high up on the winter covered mountainside.
